Over the last few months, thousands of us Research and Public Service Professionals (RPSPs) have been talking about forming a union to protect staff across all our positions, especially with the continuing uncertainty with federal and state funding.
In March, 500 staff came together for a town hall about forming a new union; since then, support for our union has exploded, with thousands more signing union authorization cards. By May 2nd, the state labor board will start counting our cards to determine if there is substantial support to move forward with a union election. With so much interest in unionization and how we can protect UC’s budget and research mission, another Town Hall is planned for Wednesday, April 30th at 12 PM. On that date, RPSPs will come together to discuss what it would mean for staff to have a seat at the bargaining table and to have enforceable rights and protections through our union. This will be a final opportunity to meet all together and ask questions before cards are counted.
